Partnering With Habitat For Humanity To Repair Homes

By VerityCU March 25, 2022 Community

Homeownership is one of the key ways to create generational wealth and break down systemic barriers affecting historically underserved communities.

This is part of the reason Verity partners with organizations like Habitat for Humanity, who are focused on collaborating with communities to create sustainable homeownership.

Thanks to members getting mortgages with Verity in 2021, Habitat for Humanity Seattle-King County is receiving more than $31,000 to support the Home Repair program.

The Home Repair program works with homeowners in some south Seattle and King County communities to fix-up their residences so that they can continue to live there rather than being displaced. Many of the homes eligible for the program would otherwise be sold for less than they could be, and the residents likely forced to move to other communities due to rising costs of homeownership where they were to begin with. This trend furthers the displacement of communities, with many of them BIPOC. By working with homeowners to fix their homes this not only gives them a safer place to live but increases the value of the home contributing to future wealth.

Plus, to help low- and moderate-income households, the program offers a deferred loan for projects costing more than $2,500, with the loan being forgiven after 10 years. For projects costing less than $2,500, the homeowner pays a flat fee of $50.
