September Celebrations: Heritage, Peace, and Community

By VerityCU September 5, 2025

As summer transitions into fall, September invites us to reflect on heritage, democracy, peace, and new beginnings. At Verity, we’re committed to building generational wealth, advancing racial equity, and supporting inclusive, thriving communities. This month offers important opportunities to celebrate culture, deepen understanding, and connect.

Month-long Observances & Celebrations

Hispanic Heritage Month — September 15 to October 15

National Hispanic Heritage Month honors the generations of Hispanic and Latino Americans who have enriched our nation through history, culture, and achievements. From art and activism to science, music, and entrepreneurship, Hispanic and Latino communities have shaped every facet of American life.

The official observance website highlights stories and resources curated by national institutions, including the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian, and the National Museum of the American Latino. Explore:

Celebrate locally: Join Sea Mar Fiestas Patrias (September 13–14, 2025) at Seattle Center, a free two-day festival featuring traditional Latin American food, music, dance, children’s activities, health screenings, and more. Part of the Seattle Center Festál series, Fiestas Patrias commemorates the independence of Latin American countries and honors the generations of Latinos who now call the U.S. home.

Events & Day Observances

International Day of Democracy — September 15

This annual observance encourages reflection on the state of democracy worldwide. The United Nations’ 2025 theme focuses on the effective governance of Artificial Intelligence (AI). AI has the potential to enhance equality, security, and participation, but also presents risks if not carefully managed. This day is a call to ensure AI strengthens, rather than undermines, democratic systems.

International Day of Peace — September 21
This year’s theme, Act Now for a Peaceful World, calls for urgent action to counter violence, hate, discrimination, and inequality. From volunteering locally to speaking up against injustice, everyone has a role in building peace. Learn more and explore actions through the UN’s International Day of Peace page.

Rosh Hashanah — begins at sundown, September 22
Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, is a time of reflection, renewal, and return (teshuvah). The holiday lasts until sundown on September 24, marking the start of the High Holy Days, which lead up to Yom Kippur. Traditions include sounding the shofar (a ram’s horn), gathering with family, and sharing symbolic foods, such as apples dipped in honey, to signify a sweet new year. Learn more here.
