October Monthly Observances & Celebrations!
Happy October! As we transition into the next month of 2022 we would like to acknowledge the celebrations and observances.
Below is a list of celebrations and observances throughout October, as well as links to government or nonprofit websites that help provide more education on each topic.
Month-long Observances & Celebrations
- Bullying Prevention Month: Learn more about bullying and bullying prevention at Youth.gov, which has links to many other great sites.
- Domestic Violence Awareness Month: Learn more about domestic violence at the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence and the International Rescue Committee sites.
- Down Syndrome Awareness Month: Learn more about Down syndrome from the National Down Syndrome Society and the Special Olympics sites.
- LGBTQ History Month: Visit LGBTHistoryMonth.com, who is highlighting a different LGBTQ icon every day in October.
- Filipino-American Heritage Month: Learn more from the Filipino American National Historical Society, a Seattle-based organization.
- Italian-American Heritage Month: Explore more at the National Italian American Foundation site.
- Polish-American Heritage Month: Explore more at the Polish American Heritage Month site.
- Hispanic Heritage Month: Started 9/15 and runs through 10/15. Check out the Intentionalist to find Latinx owned businesses to support. Also, the South Seattle Emerald has a roundup of local events to celebrate.
Daily Observances & Celebrations
- Sunday, October 2nd – International Day of Non-Violence: A day to reflect on the philosophy and strategy of non-violence. Learn more at the UN website.
- Monday, October 10th – World Mental Health Day: A day to reflect on our mental health and the care available for others. Visit the World Health Organization’s site to learn more.
- Tuesday, October 11th – National Coming Out Day: Learn more at the Human Rights Campaign site.
- Monday, October 10th – Indigenous People’s Day: A day to reflect on the history of the Americas. Learn with Verity at the B.U.I.L.D. Mini-Conference from 9:30 – 1:30, then attend the Indigenous People Festival at the Seattle Center from 1:00 – 6:00.
- Saturday, October 15th – White Cane Safety Day (Blind Awareness Day): A day to reflect and learn more about those who are totally or partially blind in our communities. Attend the White Cane Day Walk in Seattle, and learn more at the Braille Institute.
- Thursday, October 20th – Spirit Day (LGBTQIAA+ anti-bullying): Stand against bullying within the LGBTQ community. GLAAD provides more information.
- Sunday, October 23rd – 29th – Asexual Awareness Week: Learn about and support those in the community. Visit Ace Week to learn more.
