Microgrant Recipient - International Examiner

By VerityCU August 18, 2022 Microgrant

At Verity, part of our mission is building vibrant communities, and one way we do that is through our microgrant program. These small grants are available for projects that advance community wellbeing in the Greater Seattle area. Applications are accepted year round and grants are awarded twice yearly. We recently selected our spring 2022 microgrant recipients and are excited to share about each project and organization as part of our new microgrant series.

Our second highlighted recipient is the International Examiner. Since 1974, the International Examiner newspaper has served the Northwest’s Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community by “providing accurate, in-depth, timely, and sensitive coverage” of issues which directly affect them. It was created out of necessity, directly in response to the inequalities of how AAPI stories and communities were represented (or misrepresented) in news media. “Mainstream media doesn’t have the trust of and relationships with [non-white] communities to properly represent their trusths,” wrote Jill Wasberg, the Editor in Chief of International Examiner. “We work to be a trusted news source for the communities we serve in order to tell and amplify their stories.”

International Examiner publishes a physical paper on the 3rd Wednesday of every month, distributed and available for free citywide. Their online news resources is updated near daily with stories relevant to the AAPI and BIPOC communities of South Seattle, remaining forever free of paywalls to keep their news accessible to everyone.
