Happy May! As we transition into the next month of 2022 we would like to acknowledge the celebrations and observances.
Below is a list of celebrations and observances throughout May, as well as links to government or nonprofit websites that help provide more education on each topic.
Month-long Observances & Celebrations
- National Asian American and South Pacific Islander Heritage Month: A month designated to recognize and celebrate Asian Americans and South Pacific Islanders. Learn more and see a calendar of virtual events at the Asian Pacific Heritage website. For more local information, Visit Seattle has compiled a list of events and businesses to support around the Seattle area during throughout the month. Don’t forget to check your local blogs and newspapers for additional ways to support and celebrate!
- Jewish American Heritage Month: A month to recognize and celebrate Jewish Americans. Learn more and see a calendar of virtual events at the Jewish American Heritage website. For more local information, visit the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle.
- Mental Health Awareness Month: With an estimated 1 in 5 American adults struggling with their mental health, this is a month to raise awareness and destigmatize talking about mental health. The National Alliance on Mental Illness – Washington has local resources to explore, while the main National Alliance on Mental Health and Mental Health American offer additional resources and information.
Daily Observances & Celebrations
- Sunday, May 1st – Ramadan Ends in the evening.
- Tuesday, May 17th – International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia: A worldwide celebration of sexual and gender diversities. Learn more at may17.org.
- Saturday, May 21st – World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development: “Bridging the gaps between cultures is urgent and necessary for peace, stability, and development” worldwide. Visit the UN’s page for more information.
