On this coming weekend of reflection, we honor Martin Luther King Jr. and his legacy in creating a society where equality and justice exists for all. We honor our community, both past and present, in continuing the fight against inequity and injustice.
There are several community events happening across the region this holiday weekend to further the work of MLK.
- The Seattle Martin Luther King, Jr. Organizing Coalition is holding multiple events January 11th through the 17th including a youth event, opportunity fair, workshops, rally and march. All events are either virtual or at Garfield High School. Visit Seattle MLK Coalition for more information.
- The University of Washington has a week-long event schedule that includes a Holiday Observation, Come-As-You-Can Interactive Exhibit, and a UW Health Sciences and UW Medicine Office of Healthcare Equity Tribute website that goes live January 13th. Visit UW’s website for more info.
- The City of Seattle is holding an MLK Day Celebration Event on January 17th at The Royal Room. The event is a celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with music and more. r more information.
We also recognize that in 2005 the bill was passed to rename our county after Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as we not only honor him once a year but every day of each year. To read more about the history renaming King County, visit Kingcounty.gov.
