Happy New Year! As we stride into 2023, let's acknowledge and explore January's Observances and Celebrations.
Daily Observances & Celebrations
- Sunday, January 1st - New Year's Day: While this has already happened and we're in 2023, now is a good time to reflect on your own 2022 and what you'd like to accomplish in 2023. January is named after the Janus, the god of doors, always looking both back into the past and forward into the future.
- Monday, January 16th - Martin Luther King, Jr Day: A Federal Holiday observing and celebrating the birth and life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, who was born on January 15th, 1929. There is a lot of information available for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, so a quick google search will provide you with many ways to learn more.
- Interesting Fact: King County was renamed/re-namesaked on February 24th, 1986 by King County Council, removing any reference to the previous namesake. You can learn more on wikipedia here.
- Sunday, January 22nd - Lunar New Year: The year of the Rabbit! This is a celebration of the arrival of spring and the beginning of a new year on the lunisolar calendar. It is celebrated in China, South Korea, Vietnam, and many other countries throughout the world. Also, Seattle's International District will be holding several events this year! Some of the events include a food walk, and traditional performances.
- Interesting Fact: The Vietnamese and Gurung zodiac, the cat replaces the rabbit and in the Malay Zodiac, the mousedeer replaces the rabbit.
- Friday, January 27th - International Holocaust Remembrance Day: An Annual Day of Remembrance in memory of the victims of the Holocaust on the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. You can learn more from the US Holocaust Memorial Museum and from the United Nations.
