Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

By VerityCU January 12, 2023 Community

On this coming weekend of reflection, we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his legacy in creating a society where equality and justice exists for all. We honor our community, both past and present, in continuing the fight against inequity and injustice. To learn more about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his legacy click here.

There are several community events happening across the region this holiday weekend to further the work of MLK.

  • The Seattle Martin Luther King, Jr. Organizing Coalition is holding multiple events January 10th through the 16th including a youth event, opportunity fair, workshops, rally and march. All events are either virtual or at Garfield High School. Visit Seattle MLK Coalition for more information.
  • The City of Seattle is holding an MLK Day Unity Celebration Event on January 16th starting at 10 am through the Seattle Channel on TV or online. Click here for the live or prerecorded link. The event is a celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with music and more.

We also recognize that in 2005 the bill was passed to rename our county after Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as we not only honor him once a year but every day of each year. To read more about the history renaming King County, visit Kingcounty.gov.

We hope that on this day you find a way to reflect and celebrate the impact Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. had and still has on our society. We listed out a few events that Seattle is having but there are so many more events and celebrations going on throughout the state and the nation.
